Dr. Martin Skopp, DC, DACBSP
Dr. Skopp is the founder and lead chiropractor at Skopp Chiro, Sports & Health in Alexandria, bringing decades of clinical experience to patients across the region. His practice has a strong focus on sports medicine and family chiropractic care, and he holds one of the most distinguished credentials in the field—Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians. He trained directly under Dr. P. Michael Leahy, the developer of Active Release Techniques® (ART®), completing the inaugural course and later teaching the technique to fellow practitioners for several years.
Dr. Skopp's approach to care centers on identifying the root cause of each patient's condition and applying targeted, evidence-based therapies that restore function and support long-term well-being. He integrates a range of advanced techniques, including Active Release Techniques®, kinesiology taping, and Medical Qigong, to address everything from acute sports injuries and SI joint instability to postural dysfunction and chronic pain, tailoring each treatment plan to the individual.
MEET THE DOCTORSQualifications:
What is it?
Spinal care here draws on a broad toolkit: chiropractic spinal manipulation, Active Release Techniques®, instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization, Kinesio Taping®, and the Activator Methods® instrument for patients who prefer a nonforce technique. Every procedure is explained before it begins, and care is always adapted to the patient's comfort and preferences.
Who is it for?
Patients of all ages dealing with back pain, neck pain, headaches, postural issues, or general spinal dysfunction who want a thorough, multifaceted approach rather than a one-size-fits-all adjustment.
Benefits
What is it?
ART® is a patented, movement-based soft-tissue system that uses precisely directed tension combined with specific patient movements to identify and treat abnormal tissue. Dr. Skopp evaluates muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments, and nerves by hand, then applies one of over 500 specific treatment protocols tailored to each patient's condition.
Who is it for?
Athletes and non-athletes dealing with soft tissue injuries or overuse conditions, including back pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff issues, tennis elbow, shin splints, and IT band syndrome.
Benefits
What is it?
Care here addresses the entire kinetic chain, not just the spine. Dr. Skopp holds the DACBSP and is an Internationally Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician. Rather than machine-based therapies that offer only temporary relief, the focus is on hands-on soft-tissue work combined with chiropractic adjustments for more lasting results.
Who is it for?
Weekend warriors, competitive athletes, and active individuals dealing with sports injuries such as IT band syndrome, plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff injuries, tennis or golfer's elbow, and knee problems; also those hoping to avoid surgery or improve athletic performance.
Benefits
What is it?
Tiny, sterile, disposable needles are inserted at specific points along the body's 14 major meridian pathways to restore the flow of Qi. Sessions run 15 to 30 minutes and can be combined with chiropractic or ART during the same visit. Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is recognized as a safe and effective treatment worldwide.
Who is it for?
Patients managing pain, stress, hormonal imbalances, or systemic health concerns, including those with neck and back pain, sciatica, headaches, insomnia, anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue, fertility issues, digestive disorders, fibromyalgia, and autoimmune conditions.
Benefits
What is it?
Medical Qigong is a touchless energy-healing practice within Traditional Chinese Medicine that involves the direct transfer of energy from practitioner to patient. Dr. Skopp trained under Grand Master Nan Lu and Tai Master Xi-hua Xu through the Tao of Healing, a lineage passed from master to student for thousands of years.
Who is it for?
Patients seeking a non-physical, deeply restorative healing modality; those dealing with chronic pain or injury recovery; and anyone looking to support body, mind, and spirit through a practice that goes beyond conventional physical treatment.
Benefits
What is it?
QMT is a gentle, hands-on treatment rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine that clears energy blockages and enhances Qi flow throughout the body. Unlike acupuncture, it uses no needles; unlike Medical Qigong, it involves direct manual contact. It can be delivered as a standalone session or integrated with chiropractic care.
Who is it for?
Those seeking a non-invasive, holistic option; patients who prefer hands-on energy work without needles; and anyone looking to complement their chiropractic care with a restorative, whole-body treatment.
Benefits
First, many people choose to come to a chiropractor due to an injury or chronic pain. Once chiropractic treatment helps to resolve the injury or get the chronic condition to maximal improvement, there is no obligation to receive further care.
However, reaching your potential of the full expression of health can be defined as the optimal function of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. We are all on a spectrum with disease and death on one finite end and infinite health potential going in the opposite direction. Health is not just the absence of symptoms. So, it is always up to the patient whether he/she wants to further care to help achieve better function and health. That can include chiropractic care beyond symptom care. But it is always the patient's choice.
Dr Skopp has been a provider and has previously instructed Active Release Techniques (ART). ART is the leading provider of non-invasive treatment for soft-tissue and nerve issues, such as strains, sprains, and musculoskeletal disorders. This hands-on, movement-based approach swiftly alleviates pain and restores function, ensuring fuller, faster recovery compared to traditional therapy methods. ART can be used to keep soft tissues free from tightness there by creating more efficient body mechanics. Less energy is used and there is less resistance while moving, so sports performance can more readily improve.
In addition, chiropractic can improve joint mobility through mobilization and manipulation. In combination with ART, it is a winning combination for athletes.
Since chiropractic can keep joints, muscles and nerves moving and free from tightness and restriction, your body's wellbeing can be more easily expressed.
Acupuncture and TCM can help release blocked pathways in your body's underlying vital force and energy system called Qi (pronounced Chee). This Qi travels through invisible channels called meridians. Acupuncture needles can move stuck Qi which prevents greater health and can cause pain.
